I switched blogs, but thought this was something fun to post in case you meander on through the old blog. And here’s the link to the new blog too – pick me!

A couple years back, Professional Photographers of America started an annual competition that allows members to submit a photo for the chance to get on the cover of the magazine. I think it is such a great idea for so many reasons and love seeing the results of the competition and what images were entered, why they were chosen, etc. As scary as submitting work to various competitions is, it actually is a great thing for photographers. You get incredible feedback that will help you improve your craft as well as the chance to win. There’s only one sure fire way to make sure you don’t succeed and that’s by not trying. How many times have I heard that? And let’s see, how long did it take me to actually practice that? Let’s just say a long time.

The rating doesn't effect the official judging, but I would love feedback, so please take a couple of seconds and rate it here! Plus you can win a Canon G11 (this is the very camera I use to capture Photo of the Week and other such randomness. He also goes by Bolt).

New Blog Address

I know. I did this last year and said I wouldn't change my blog address again. Forgive me. But I did.

I like life. I like photography and I like love - so why not put three of my favorite things together? And I promise there is some logic to the madness and hopefully in time I won't be the only one who sees it :)

Number of snails that died - 0, but I think he is a narcoleptic.

But no fear, as of Monday at 7:00 a.m., there's The Unsub, and the two frogs: Dr. Spencer Reid #3 and Morgan. We'll pick up a Hotch #3 later today. Unless Petsmart looks at our record.

Last year for my birthday I came up with 30 things that I wanted to accomplish before I hit the big 3-0. I still have some time (but da-ang does it go by fast) and recently I was reminded of one goal that might be a little harder than I thought to accomplish. Finishing my Masters? Nope. Learning a whole new language? Nein. Those are of course hard, but nah, those aren’t the goals I'm referring to. I’m talking about the one involving a garden.

I’m actually rather embarrassed to post the following images, but there comes a time in one’s life where they realize that they need to ask for advice because what they are trying is clearly not working. The pot is supposed to contain white daisies. The small skeletal figure in dried up dirt? A Bonsai tree. If that doesn't scream Green Thumb, then really, I don't know what does. Skillz!

But I will not quit!

Just feel free to leave lots and lots of gardening advice :)

This weekend I decided I wanted to get a fish. Not quite a puppy or kitten, but something to make my apartment rad. I came out of Petsmart with a fish, frog and snail. Awesome.

I think I was most excited about naming the little creatures. If you can guess where the names come from, you earn 20 stars in my book.

Meet Hotch, the Betta - he comes across standoff-ish, but in reality, he keeps it real.

Dr. Spencer Reid #2, the African Dwarf Frog. What's with the number 2 you ask? Well, there was a #1 and when I first saw him laying upside down at the bottom of the tank I thought he was hanging out. But I should have known I didn't pick a winner when he got himself stuck in the water filter within hours of being at his new home. So I went back to Petsmart and it turns out that he wasn't lazy, but was DYING. Neat. It only took two days for that to happen. Good thing there's a 14 day return policy on that sucker. So this is the newest Dr. Reid. He has a gimp leg, but what's a pet without a little mishap?

Last, but certainly not least - The Unsub, a snail.

Booknerds Unite

I like to read. A lot. Like I-give-up-my-Saturdays-because-this-book-is-freakishly-awesome lot. And re-reading an 8 book series? Totally normal. Yep, I’m one of those. I hate finding a really good book series to read though. Why? Because then it has to go and end.

Guys, its rough being a book nerd.

Anyway, here are some recent and old timers that I love:

Chronicles of Narnia – Who doesn’t love a big fuzzy lion named Aslan?

Mark of the Lion Series – This is legit. And you should read things that are legit.

Harry Potter – A story of love overcoming evil. And I’m a fan of love.

Lord of the Rings – It has Hobbits in it. I think I’ve made my point.

And my newest fav: Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I’ve had a soft spot for Ancient Greek history and mythology since some of the history courses I took at CSUF, so this one was perfect. I’m excited that it is hitting the big screen on February 12th.

And finding an old used copy of my favorites books?? It's like Christmas all over again.

I was talking with my dad recently and I said something that I never, I mean never ever, thought I would say:

“Oh good, it’s gonna be in the fifties next week!” I was referring to the weather.

This came from someone who thinks 72 is a little too chilly. But Texas decided to throw a wickedly cold winter at me and I’ve had no choice but to suck it up. And while pouring water on my windshield at 7:15 in the morning only to watch it freeze again is never on my Favorite Things list, I’ll give cold weather this – it makes for some beautiful things to see.

Today we celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. When I think of the work people like Martin and so many others did – I am inspired. They stood against the majority because they knew in their hearts what was right. Instead of hate, they chose love.

It’s amazing when people live out love the change that can happen. Especially with the earthquake in Haiti, now more than ever, we need people to stand up and make a change. So let’s.

Here’s some of my favorite MLK quotes:

Before I write about the handsome little devil below, I need to get one thing out. I did not sign up for 24 degree weather when I moved to Texas, so if anyone wants to work on getting that fixed, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

On to this week’s photo of the week. This is Jackson. He’s kind of a big boy and loves attention, so it’s kind of hard to ignore him. But he’s so cute, that it’s kind of hard not to anyway. My friend Mariko and I are pet-sitting him and his sister Taylor and they remind me how much I want a dog. These two puppies make me laugh!

I'm going to run 13.1 miles

Sometimes I make decisions and then the next day/week/month when I stop and think about it, I ask “What the hey was I thinking?” For example, willingly signing up and even paying to run 13.1 miles. Yeah. Don’t know what I was thinking either. But when I’m with friends, we laugh, tell stories, dream big dreams and sign up for half marathons. It’s a very natural progression.

All that to say, on February 14th, 2010 I will attempt to run the most I have ever run at one time in my entire existence. I’m pretty sure my knees hate me right now as I train and my lateral collateral ligament might strangle me in the middle of the night. Thank you WebMD for assuring me that if I don’t have a doctor place a fiber optic telescope in my knee to find the problem, it might self combust. Alright, that may have been edging towards melodramatic, but whenever I try and diagnose myself using the world wide web, I somehow manage to conclude that I have some insane and rare illness that all started with a paper cut.

So, if you have any advice for a first time marathoner, please - the comment section is begging to be your friend! Like really, please…I have to get up to 10.1 more miles. In less than two months. Party!!!

What? Another blog about Forbeyon? Wow, Jamie, isn’t that the 4759075448399th blog you have written about them? To which I say, yes, yes it is. But besides amazing design and craftsmanship, Forbeyon gave me yet another reason to heart them as my album company and why you should check them out too. I’m thinking probably after you finish this blog.

A lot of times you can tell the most about a company when you have a situation to handle, a “trial” so to speak (this one was all my fault too – yay!!). And how did Forbeyon handle it?? LIKE ROCK STARS!!! They are a company where the customer comes first. And that is reason #589 I heart Forbeyon.

Georgia on my mind

If you have had your fair share of aquariums, you'll probably come to the same conclusion as me - jelly fish are at every one. With bright blue water. But no matter how many times I see them, I am utterly fascinated. And even if they can do mega damage with their stringy legs, as I watch them float and dance around in the water, I become relaxed. Maybe it's the electric blue water that gets me. But whatever the reason – I always enjoy aquariums, especially going to the Georgia Aquarium (the world’s biggest). They are coming out with a Dolphin exhibit in November, so I just might have to take another trip out there.

Awww…he was sleepy! The turtle was a little shy too.

Next stop: Coco Cola Museum. The first time I was in Atlanta, it was in another part of town, so I was looking forward to seeing the new place. I wish I had more time because there was so much more to it – but once again, just gives me another excuse to go back!

Being 2

When I was 2 years old I remember…absolutely nothing. I mean I barely remember 6th grade and I try and block Jr. High, because really – who has pleasant memories from the most awkward era of your life? The memories start flowing more consistently in high school. I’m not sure what that says about my brain, but I really don’t want to know.

But when I get a chance to photograph the young kids, I am always reminded about the simple things and what it was like being 2. Hanging with little Kylie and her mom Jennifer for some Christmas portraits was so much fun! Not only did I get to see the rock that Round Rock was named after, I was reminded that wearing a dress shouldn’t stop you from climbing, swings are really the best thing in the world, waterfalls are fascinating and when all else fails just throw leaves in the water (and if you want to live adventurous, go with sticks). A child always reminds me that it’s the little things. So that’s what I’m going to hang on too – finding joy in the little things.

It’s 2010. I feel that with such a momentous year I should have some epic New Year’s Resolutions. But I don’t. Not really. Instead, I want to live out love more than I did in 2009. I want to love more deeply, love more truly and love more passionately. I want people to see the Love that guides me in everything I do. Because when it all comes down to it – Love is the answer.

So to start off 2010, I leave with a benediction and blessing:

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart. May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom, and peace. May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, hunger and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy. And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in the world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done.

My last post of the year and I'm hanging out in Lithonia, Georgia (right outside of Atlanta) with my cousins, aunt, parents, brother and the my grandpa Tat - who is ringing in his 98th New Year's. Yep - he's an amazing man.

A blizzard in Texas

The title of this post may have been a slight exaggeration. And by slight I mean I just multiplied the truth by 100. To the second power. But it did snow in Austin! This was a first for me so it might be accurate to say I ran outside, jumped up and down and even screamed.

And good thing I had my trusty Flip Mino to document this event. Warning - you might have to look real close to see the flakes, because it's a quick video :). But I promise, they were there.

I’m losing my mind

No really, I think I am. And my recent travels prove it. While I did survive a cancelled flight and overnight stay in Denver with only my carry on and purse – the trip home got me thinking I might be losing it.

I had a late flight that got delayed – we landed at 12:14 a.m. So, as the plane landed, I wanted to be prepared and have everything ready so I could jump on the shuttle, get in my car and get home. As I dug around in my purse for my keys, I couldn’t find them. First thought – purses like to hide things, so I’ll just sort through once off the plane. But once off the plane I emptied it and there was no denying it. I had no keys. To my car or my apartment. Yay! Commence epic amounts of praying. Actually, all that materialized in my brain was “Please Lord…please.” I figured I must have left them in or around my truck because I knew they weren’t in California. So there were two possibilities to look forward to – stolen car or keys miraculously there. Guess which one I was praying for. As the shuttle pulled up to my truck, I noticed that my keys were on the bumper. That’s right - THE BUMPER! Hanging out for 5 days. I might as well have put up a sign that read “Please steal me, because clearly my owner hates me.” I think I said “Thank you Lord” 150 times in one minute. Moral of the story – I’m losing my mind.

In other news – I was excited to get this calendar from my friend Jamie during my visit to Cali. One of the pics I took of her sweet boy Grant a little bit ago made it in February! That’s him on the bottom right corner. Aw!!

My favorite Christmas song of all time is O Holy Night. I think I might have 862 versions of the song on my iPod. I’ll actually sing it any time of the year. 4th of July? Perfect! Early this month, my friend Mariko informed me that it was originally a French poem. This clearly makes sense because people who are French are brilliant :).

Reading the history and the original poem make me love the song even more - if that were possible. The original song was written by Placide Cappeau and called Midnight, Christians. It was also the first song to ever be broadcast on radio, debuting Christmas Eve in 1906. If that doesn’t confirm the brilliance of it, then I don’t know what does. A beautiful song, a beautiful language.

This Christmas, may you experience the truth behind this song and experience love today. Merry Christmas!

It's time to bake

I have a sweet tooth. Actually, I think all 32 of my teeth are sweet. I love cooking, but I think I might have a love for baking a little bit more. Cookies, cakes, brownies, cinnamon rolls…the list is a long one, but I really can’t help it. I have weaknesses. Don’t judge me.

This past weekend some of my peeps, Mariko and Jessica, and I had a day of sugar cookie bakin and decoratin. Finished off the day with delivering them to some people and dinner at Mighty Fine. The only thing that ruined my evening was when the Saints thought it would be fun to lose to Dallas. 1972 Dolphins live a little longer. Not sure how much though with the way the Colts are playing.

Enough football chatter though, yay for Christmas!

So see all the really, really cute cookies that are decorated with detail, pretty colors and care? Yep, those are my friend's Jessica's. See the Gingerbread man that looks like it belongs in Ghostbusters? That would be my skillz. With a z.

Christmas is coming!!

I love Christmas. And I don't say that to sound cool and hip this time of year, because clearly we all know that's not the case. It's only 10 days away. 10!!! I'm so excited that I already wrote a blog for Christmas. Nerds UNITE! But fo shizzle - Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year. This is true for many reasons, but the main reason? To steal a line from Jars of Clay, because Love came down at Christmas :).

And I get to go back to Cali for Christmas and then ring in the New Year in the ATL. West side and East side. I don't play favorites. Just kidding, I do. But my grandpa Tat is in Atlanta, so to Atlanta I shall go. I love going to that area. I have a special place in my heart for Alpharetta (right outside the ATL). Please try not to be jealous of the bumpin New Year's I'll be having with my 97 year old grandpa :)

And this Christmas is the first Christmas with a brother-in-law. We're growing up!! Maybe next Christmas I'll have a niece or nephew. Just sayin...

Help-Portrait was AWESOME!

It was about giving and not taking anything in return, but as these things usually turn out - we came away with a lot more than we gave. The idea was simple. Take professional portraits of people who might never get them. Single mothers, families struggling to make it. People.

It was awesome! Being able to use what I love to bless someone else - yep, loved every minute of it. I would love to post so many pictures of the beautiful families, but that wasn't what Help-Portrait was about. It wasn't about building a portfolio or about showing the images we can take. It was about hanging out with families, letting 3 year old kids play with my camera and giving families a gift that will last.

Sheena put together a great video from our Austin event. I seriously can't wait for next year.

But of course I can't post without a pic, so here's the pics the little girl took from the video - photographer in the making!!

A little California Love

The fact that I get to go back and forth to California makes me really happy. I don't know if I could go more than a couple months without visiting my favorite state. There are several legit reasons too. Del Taco (shocking, I know), the Lakers, the rents, siblings, In N Out, El Pollo Loco, Daphne's, Corner Bakery, family, friends...I could continue, but then you would a) think I have a problem with eating and b) get bored. :) But I'll throw out one more reason - the kiddies in my life!

My cousin David and cousin-in-law (is that a legit term? I am genuinely curious) Liz have three of the world's most adorable children. I promise I'm not just saying that and I have pictures to prove it. Man, do I miss those kiddies already! Good thing Christmas is only a few weeks away. That means lots of tickling, laughing and yep, food :)

For those who know me – I kinda like history. I am always amazed at what you can learn from people and what they have to offer from the lives they lived. And plus I’m kind of geeky. That usually sums things up.

I remember coming across this letter when I was in high school and maybe it’s because it’s Abe, but I like it and thought it was perfect to share this Thanksgiving, especially the last paragraph. Enjoy today as you spend time with family and friends!

My friends have kids!!!

My friends and I always joke about getting older. Rumor has it that there is nothing you can do to stop it. :) It’s fun though! Especially when we still get asked if we are in high school and college.

But as we get older, exciting change comes with that and I love that I am a part of my friend’s lives and get to experience life changes with them. Some of us are single (holla!) and some have gotten married and now have the world’s cutest kiddies!

My friend, Robin, who lives in Portland, has the kiddies, so we all get to play the part of Auntie. Have I mentioned that I love it?!

P-Diddy (aka PDX) Oregon

For the first time in my life, I flew First class. I had a bunch of miles who were screaming to be used, so when I needed to book a flight to Portland, my miles came in handy. I even got bumped to First Class for free. Why thank you American Airlines, but you still lost my allegiance since you charge me for everything and often lose my luggage.

Not going to lie, First Class has it perks. Although spilling soda on another person’s seat and then all over the floor is a pretty awesome way to clue everyone in the First Cabin that you are 5. Neato.

A few other things learned from First Class – You actually have leg room. This was huge. Made it easier when I was trying to clean up the Sprite Spill of 09. They ask to hang up your coat. Nice, but completely unnecessary as the powers at be thought it necessary to keep the cabin at - 3.2 degrees. You get real glasses, food with real silverware, and even a warm cookie with milk. Never saw that one coming. Then there was the warm towel. I felt like Adam Sandler on the Wedding Singer. :) Oh yeah, and a mint before you exit the plane.

It was a great way to start off my trip to Portland. At least once a year, my college b/f/f’s get together just to hang and catch up on life. We are spread throughout the United States, so I have grown to value these times so much. Skype, text, facebook, phones calls are great, but there is nothing like just hanging with your ladies. Hey!

Portland in Fall is gorgeous. We took a walk through town and I had to force myself not to stop at every leaf. The reds, oranges, and yellows are stunning.

And have you ever heard of Powell’s Bookstore? O.M. – A booknerd’s dream. The building takes up a block and is 4 levels high. I could have spent hours. Nice touch Portland, nice touch.

Oh yeah – Portland wants to be just like Austin. Just had to point that one out :) I saw a sticker that read “Keep Portland Weird.” It’s all good Portland, I don’t blame you for wanting to be like one of the best cities E.V.E.R.

Destination Weddings

This past week has been exciting. Got some AWESOME weddings confirmed for next year, including Mexico and Florida. Reminds me why I love being a destination wedding photographer. I often check out magazines for destination weddings and recently came across Martha Stewart’s Special Travel Issue. If you are interested in having a destination wedding, this is a great magazine to go out and get! Lots of creative and cute ideas that will help plan your special day in a beautiful location.

This crazy pup Bella just might be one of my favorites. Who doesn't love a yellow lab who causes you to tip a table while chillin at Starbucks because she saw some boy dogs walk on by? Bella is hilarious and can snore like nobodies business. Never short of laughs while pet sittin this crazy!

Whoa, whoa...I forgot how to rest

Where does it say with each passing year of life, it is supposed to get more insane? I remember in the days of 21 unit semesters and working during college, thinking there is no way, I mean NO WAY my life could get any busier. Good for me… I found a way!!

But here’s the thing I have discovered recently. Or better yet, re-discovered. It ain’t worth it. I know there are priorities and stuff needs to get done. For a lot of people, it isn’t always bad things that fill our time. For me, working through non-profit ideas and paperwork is exciting, but I still need to take a break. Because 24 hours are meant to be dedicated to work. Plus, it isn’t worth my sanity :). I like keeping that one around (at least for a while little longer). This idea of rest has hit me from so many different avenues over the past month. Even the past two weeks at my church, holler for the Austin Stone, have been about the Sabbath and rest. So if I must take a day to just row on the lake and maybe even have a movie marathon, I guess I will.

So it seemed only fitting to come across the For the Love Workshop when I did this past week.

The splash page of their website reads: Then Jesus said, "Let's get away from the crowds for a while and rest." (Mark 6:31). This workshop is about photography and taking a break. Half workshop, half retreat. Yes please.

Plus it is going to take place in Tennesseean (A word? Yes? Maybe? Do I need help?) mountains. And please tell me I wasn’t the only one who wanted to sing “I’m proud to be an American” the first time driving through Brentwood/Franklin/Nashville and seeing those lovely hills. Maybe it was just me and my friends. Yep, we’re that cool.

But back to the workshop – this really looks like a great way to get away in a beautiful location and take time to connect with the stuff that is important. And it is a great way to get a creative boost! They say it all - “If you are longing for a break from the stress and a place for inspiration, then you should consider coming to "For the Love". Help-Portrait: the Remix

Back in September I posted about Help-Portrait. Yesterday I got back from a planning meeting and I'm really excited about what is going to happen on December 12th. We are still looking for some help though! Our three major needs are hair stylists, make up artists and an awesome printing company to donate their resources for printing the images. If that's you or you know someone who fits in one of those categories, please let me know!!

I heart me some card games. Take Speed for example. If possible, I would have my PhD. My sister and I had some epic tournaments back in the day. What would start as a best of 5 round, ended up a best of 983. I suck at poker though because the concept of “poker face” does not exist in my being. If I have a good cards, my face gives it away in approximately 2.98 seconds.

With all the card games out there, it is a pretty safe bet to say that Spades is my all time favorite. Poker face? It’s not only totally not necessary, the opposite is actually quite encouraged when we play. Books, tricks, cutting an Ace…those things make me smile!! This week started the tradition of a monthly Spades night and it was so much fun! And no matter what, we’ll always have a different deck to play with. Por que you ask? That was the souvenir I always got during my early travels, but after a box full of a trillion decks of cards I thought I would try something else :). But occasionally, I still add one to the mix. Its fun to go through and relive mems :)

Morning always comes

I recently came across The I Heart Project. And it looks amazing. This month they are coming out with a documentary called The I Heart Film. Run by Hillsong United, which is based out of Australia (automatic radness points), this film follows the team around the world. The website says it better than me:

“As United crisscross the globe they are confronted and ultimately overwhelmed by the stories of remarkable individuals facing injustice and the uncomfortable paradox of being united in worship yet divided in circumstance. If their entire focus is directed only to what happens on stage, then maybe they have missed the point altogether. Filmed over a period of 2 years, The I Heart Revolution: We’re all in this Together follows the worship band, Hillsong United, as they travel across 6 continents 42 nations and 93 cities in a cross-cultural journey of music, animation, interviews and live action documentary as they realise every story of hope, love, loss and sacrifice ultimately points to the one story.”

I’ve watched one of the trailers for the film and what the guy said in it struck me deep. As I listened to what he had to say, my heart came alive. You know that feeling when your heart starts beating faster because you have connected with something so closely. It was kind of like that. It reminded me of why I want to use photography for something bigger than myself. The trailer talked about how all too often we will hear stories and just feel sad, but do nothing more. Here's from the trailer:

“We’ll say, that’s not right, that’s not fair. And that’s all we do. Because all too often to do anything more is going to cost us something.

If that’s where it ends, then perhaps is fair to say that when we ignore the prostitute and child, we actually lend our hand to their abuse.

Vendor Shout Out!! Totally Rad Actions

I'm always weary of the software available to artists and photographers. Maybe it's because I jumped the gun early on and ended up with quite a few programs that I have used maybe 13.7 times, the last time being in 2007. Live and learn friends. Live and learn. When I heard about Totally Rad Actions from ProPhotoHub, I clicked on the site mainly because they used the word rad in their name. And I'm totally not joking either. Rad holds a special place in my made-in-the-80's heart.

Checking out the website, I instantly fell in love. I have the first set and can't wait to get the TRA Revenge and rumor has it that they are coming out with presets for Lightroom. I may have jumped up and down when I read that on their blog. Anyway, if you are looking for some legit photoshop actions, be sure to check out Totally Rad Actions.

It’s Fall.

I heart Fall.

There are so many things I love about it! Pumpkin Bread, cool and crisp nights, pumpkin bread, albondigas (mmmmm…), movie marathons on rainy Saturdays, Thanksgiving with the fam, chili and corn bread, fall décor, getting ready for Christmas, oh yeah and pumpkin bread. :) I’ve been getting festive and it just makes me happy!

Here’s my first attempt at pumpkin carving. I had a great time with some of my closest Austin peeps last night while carving some pumpkins and eating lots of goodness. I think I may have found my new career path. Or not :).

Why I want to be foolish

I don’t want to stay comfortable. I don’t want to become accustomed to what is going on around me and become numb. I also don’t want to be so overwhelmed with sadness that I give up. Because in today’s world that is easy to do. I pray daily that I never will and with each new story of hurt, pain and injustice that happens and I hear about, the desire to speak out on their behalf, be a voice for them will only grow bigger and deeper. Because, for as loud as they are crying out, they aren’t being heard.

And so begins the journey that I have wanted to take for some time. Non Profit. Those two words get me excited. With JLP, I have had the opportunity to raise money and now I want to get in the fight and get my hands dirty. This is still in the very beginning stages. Like, those involved are still deciding on a name. :) Things are moving though and as details get hammered out, you bet I’ll be posting! But here’s the cliff notes, cliff notes version: Using photography to raise awareness and support (providing basic needs, health, Hope, etc) for kids who need it most.

To help with this new adventure, we’re going to need some money. So for the final 2009 JLP release, all the money that comes in will go straight into starting a non profit (which mostly includes paperwork). I've been humbled already with the response of people who want to help (like a website!!). I’m excited and hope you will join in! This new release is a few photos from my recent Hawaii trip. That place is gorgeous…sigh…how much I want to return :).

Meet Bolt

I have been wanting a point and shoot camera for a while. I like having a camera with me wherever I go, but don't think carrying a million pound camera backpack is the smartest and most logical thing to do. I know, call me crazy. So the search for an epic point and shoot began. I couldn't bring myself to look outside of the world of Canon :), we're just too good of friends, and I had heard great things about the G Series. I was ready to get the G10, but heard the G11 was going to make an appearance. Perfect! I could wait a couple more months.

So....I would like to formally introduce you to Bolt, my new G11. Yep, I named him. Don't hate. And I thought it would be a fun addition to Photo of the Week. From now on, POTW will be a picture I took using Bolt during the week. Kind of like a 365 Project. I'll also share more about the camera as I play around with it in different settings and environments. Enjoy!

Dress for Success

Once again, I come before the blog world and admit that I am a slacker. I really like to blog every day because it keeps me writing and keeps me shooting. And I like doing both of those. But then life happens and there you have it. At least I know I’m not alone in wondering what the hey happened to October and how it is possible that we are already heading into November? At least its time for fall decorations!!

While this month has flown by, there have been some good times, including a recent benefit fashion show for the Austin chapter of Dress for Success. The mission of Dress for Success is “to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.” Yep – pretty awesome indeed. Held at Julian Gold and sponsored by Winstead (which friends, is located in one of my favorite buildings west of the Mississippi, the Frost Bank Tower. So when I went to deliver the photos I felt like a total five year old – yep Loser), it was a great night to see the latest fashion trends, hear about the work Dress for Success is doing and have a wonderful time with wonderful people. Here’s some details from the event. I would definitely check out ways to volunteer – there are some great opportunities!

This past Saturday I got to join with hundreds of people for the annual MS Walk - Austin. Me and my co-workers (I currently am double teaming with two jobs right now :) from Dahill helped sponsor the event and it was great! It was a great time with friends from work and it was a great way to raise support for people with MS. We topped our goal of $5,000.00! If there is a walk in your area I strongly suggest that you take part.

Yep - I have a little obsession that has developed. It started out with a single pair. I was good with just one for a long while. Like, I'm-surprised-that-the-soles-are-still-intact while. Then I bought another pair. Then another. But do you really blame me?? They are so comfortable and they literally help change the world. They have new styles too, so check out Tom's Shoes right now!! And tell them I sent you! In which case absolutely nothing will happen, but I just really wanted to write that. :)

If it was up to me to decide work attire, my entire shoe collection would consist of these babies and Locals. I'll make that a rule when I have a non-profit up and running :).

I heart my people. All four groups of them. :) I love that each side of my family has different traditions. This usually involves good food and always epic times. This past week, I got to hang out with my dad's side as we celebrated my cousin's 25th Wedding Anniversary. It was so much fun! And we couldn’t celebrate without a touch of New Orleans, complete with a bit of second lining :).

Growing up, Kirk and Shanna and their two kids lived a short drive away, so there are so many great memories and laughs from the days of my youth that include them. Too bad that time in Cali didn’t turn Kirk into a Lakers fan, but I’m working on it. Who would have thought that I would join them in this great state of Tejas?!

Of course I cried during this event, but who wouldn’t? 25 years of marriage is truly something to celebrate and what a blessing it was. All you have to do was look at how they still smile when they see each other and you know the past 25 years are just the beginning for them.

Kirk and Shanna - I'm so glad that we all got to be a part of this celebration. Shanna - you looked gorgeous and Kirk, you were lookin sharp!! May you experience another 25 years of radness! Love you both so much!!

My biggest supporters

When I think of the person I am today, outside of my faith and Jesus :), I know a huge part of who I have become is because of my parents. Look up amazing and there will be my rents :).

I think it is so important as you venture into the world of self-employment (or really anything for that matter), that you have people who will be there to encourage you, be there when you fail (because you probably will), be there to celebrate with you and just be there when you need someone to talk to. I am blessed with a lot of people that fit into this category (friends and family), but my parents definitely earn the gold medal.

And they came out to visit me last week!! It was such a great time and reminded me how much I love those two. Thanks Mom and Dad for being my biggest fans!

Amani! Amani! Amani!

I take no blame for my obsession with traveling, culture or constant need for adventure. It’s all my parent’s fault. You see, in the summer of ’91 my parents took us to Florida and Disneyworld. By far Epcot Center blew me away. There was an area that included 11 different pavilions of 11 different countries. At the beginning of the day I was given a little passport (which I still have) and at each country, you could get it stamped, a worker there (who was from the native country) wrote something in their language and I was able to see various little trinkets from that country. After the first country, I was hooked. Like bad. Even as a lower case g, I had found my purpose :).

My siblings and cousin wanted to go see attractions (why do that at a theme park?!) and walk all around, but no, no, I could do no such thing while so many countries awaited me. And of course my parents are awesome, so my mom took the three of them around and my dad took me to each country, so I could explore and get my passport stamped. I think I took most of the day. But that really was what started it all.

Since then, I have been blessed with where adventures have taken me around the globe and by far one of my favorite places I have been is Africa. The people you meet there, the beauty of that place still gets me so excited even a couple years after my first trip. One thing I feel in love with was the fashion. I love bold colors, striking patterns and creative bags. So when I came across Amani Ya Juu – it was a match made in heaven. For real.

Amani Ya Juu, which means “higher peace” in Swahili, is a self-sustaining sewing and reconciliation project for marginalized women based in East Africa. And what these women create is AMAZING!! ! From the bags, to the necklaces, Christmas ornaments to the salad spoons – I would buy one of each if I could.

So when I heard that you could host a party, get a massive box from Africa and sell the products on behalf of these amazing women, I may have almost passed out. I am still debating if it was a good thing or a bad thing that I got to go through the box first and put aside a “little” pile of purchases.

I want to invite you to this awesome party, so please come!! All the income generated through these sales provides support for the women and their families and sustains the growth and development of the Amani centers (which are currently in Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi). Join me in empowering and equipping women in Africa. Oh, and get awesome and brilliant items.

A "Wish" List

I think in every career, people have a wish/dream list. For actors, it might be to play a certain type of role or maybe even shoot a film with a certain director. For a soccer player, to play for Man U. :) I like to dream big dreams, so besides my dream to photograph every single country/continent, on the portrait end I would love to photograph these famous people. Thank you google image for the pics, but I wish you would include the original photographer. I only could find one. But anyway, here's my "wish list" :)

Morgan Freeman – It was either Driving Miss Daisy or Glory (one of my favorite movies ever) that I first saw Morgan Freeman on the big screen. Since then he has always been one of my favorite actors.

Denzel Washington – Me and Denzel go way back to Glory days too. I’ve been a fan since 7th grade and minus Training Day, thoroughly enjoy his films. Plus he is a Laker fan and I once saw him at a Laker game. What. What. That pretty much makes us pals. :)

Daniel Henney – This one is totally just because he was in Wolverine. Totally.

Micheal Jordan – Oh, I don’t know…maybe because he is my favorite basketball player EVER. Sorry Kobe. But don't worry, the Lakers are still my boys.

Bill Cosby – He’s just rad.

We always have a choice

This past weekend I saw As We Forgive. It's a documentary on the reconciliation that is happening in Rwanda. This film follows two women that come face to face with the men who murdered their families during the genocide. And it's powerful.

It reminded me that I always have a choice, no matter the situation. I can look at the glass as half empty or as half full. I can sit and complain about the wrongs of the world or I can take action.

The world is full of injustice. I can grow callous and throw my hands up in the air or I can take the harder path - get my hands dirty and love. I choose love. And not because I am awesome or perfect, because trust me when I say I am not. Or just ask my parents :). But it is because I have experienced a perfect love and I pray that my response/my life comes from the overflow of love I receive from Him on a daily basis.

One of the most powerful parts from the film was the change in the women after they forgave the men who killed their families. One of the women first refused to meet with the man, but after a while decided too. Their meeting was filmed and all I can say is... wow. I don't even know what else to say about it. The man, who was truly remorseful, was begging for mercy, while the woman worked through the pain she felt. She left their first meeting without forgiving the man. But the story didn't end there. She did forgive and what joy came with that. The woman was able to smile again. Like I said, sometimes choosing love is hard.

But when you need to make a choice, I say choose love.

Help-Portrait

I've mentioned Jeremy Cowart before. He's an awesome photographer based in Nashville. He and other Nashville photographers came together and came up with the idea of Help-Portrait and simply put - I love it. It's about giving. As the website reads "Help Portrait is a movement of photographers who are using their time, equipment and expertise to give back to those who are less fortunate this holiday season."

I like movements that have meaning. Some people might think having a picture taken isn't really a big deal. But I think different. All you have to do is see the joy a mom has when she is given a beautiful portrait of her child and you'll know what I am talking about.

And of course ATX keeps it real, so there are some really cool things happening. If you are a photographer in Austin - please join the movement!! We have our own website and group where we connect with ideas and updates. We have a location for Help Portrait, but are still in need of LOTS of help. And this is not just for photographers. Last week I took a break from blogging. Part because I was sick, part exhaustion and part I just needed a break. It seems like the only time I really rest is when I'm sick. Then I have no choice because my body refuses to move. Good? No. But true none the less. I am so glad to be rid of the sickness and have energy! Just in time for the fam's visit later this week. Holla!

I'm excited about some of the things going on in the photo world too - lots of amazing things happening and stuff I am really blessed to be a part of. So please…join me! Since it is Monday's, here's another installment of Monday, monday...ba-da ba-da-da-da...(thank you Mamas & the Papas) post :).

If you ever do a search of photography organizations on google, 142,000,000 results pop up in .27 seconds. There's lots. Some legit, some not. Today I wanted to share a little about Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and why I like them.

1. The Monthly Magazine is creatively called Professional Photographer ;). I really, really like this magazine. There are always great articles, reviews, interviews, etc. Every time mine comes in the mail, I bust out my notebook while going through it, writing out websites to check out, notes from articles and great ideas shared. This helps me keep it all in one place and makes it easy to actually go back and check out stuff from the magazine. I always come away learning something after going through the magazine. And there’s always gorgeous photos and final stories of people who are doing good in the photo world.

2. Imaging USA. I've been to this conference once in Tampa and I had an amazing time. I listened to some amazing speakers from all photographic fields that inspired me in so many ways. I came away with ideas and even won a brand new lens. What. What. The Expo is massive too. When you first walk in it, it is a little overwhelming, but since you have a few days it works out. It switches cities every year and that's cool for several reasons. It spreads the love and gives me an excuse to travel to all kinds of cities in the US. :) The next one in January will be in Nashville and trust me – rad city!

3. Everything else. With PPA membership you get access to all kinds of goods and protections that you wouldn't think you need until the moment hits. They are always working for professional photographers too. Whether that be copyright laws, education, opportunities…they just like us :).

I would definitely check them out if you are a professional photographer.

I think I have an issue because I haven’t stopped thinking about surfing. This is bad.

This has led to a simple conclusion. The worst part about awesome trips is that you have to come home. Who came up with that rule? Boo!!

So maybe this post is a little more for me and my one-of-the-most-gorgeous-places-ever withdrawals :), but whatever the reason, here’s a few more pics from Maui. Enjoy!

Have I mentioned that I love anything to do with water? Because I do.

This has sadly happened in my lifetime. One of the more recent taking place in the small country of Rwanda. Tucked away between Uganda, Burundi and the DR Congo, for 100 days in 1994, Rwanda was home to the brutal murders of a million Rwandans at the hands of fellow countrymen. Fifteen years have passed, so what now?

The documentary As We Forgive, looks at this exact question through the eyes of two Rwandan women who had family murdered and those who committed the those crimes. I have the privilege of hosting a screening and hope you can come. From the website:

Directed by Laura Waters Hinson and narrated by Mia Farrow comes the award-winning documentary of two Rwandan women who struggle with the face-to-face encounter with the men who slaughtered their families during the 1994 genocide. I’ve decided that Mondays can be cruel. I only like them when I’m on vacation or traveling somewhere. :). But since they decide to come whether I give permission or not, here’s another installment of “Mondays!”

Granted this isn’t exactly a photography resource blog, but I just came across this couple and their site this morning thanks to Twitter. I like contests (I’m still hoping I win the Maui Marriott one :) and they are having a really fun contest as they promote their Spread the Love tour. At first I thought maybe I’ll just give a shout out on twitter because I want to win something, but then after checking it out, they are what I like to call legit. I hope they do decide to come to Austin, because I would love to go! I know I've talked about the greatest college ever multiple times on the blog. That's because APU (holla for the Cougars) produces some pretty rad alumni. I'm just sayin. Catie happens to be one of them :). We had some good times and laughs working for the Clause (our school paper) and taking classes together. She was definitely a life saver on various occasions when I needed to have sports story covered, so I didn't have to play editor and reporter for every single event that week. I was SOOO glad that we connected through facebook years after graduation!! She's the same awesome Catie :). Then it worked out that I got to shoot their wedding in Maui :)

And after meeting Kurt - I knew he was perfect for Catie. He definitey loves to joke, laugh and have a good time. Holler! I'll never get over seeing a couple together who heart each other. Aw! I love seeing perfect matches!!!

Catie and Kurt - I cannot say thank you enough for letting me be a part of your special day. You guys looked so great and everything was perfect! And I'm pretty sure I ate enough banana bread to last me through 2011 :).

Surfing 101 in Maui

I've been surfing once before in my life (I know...I just admitted how bad of a Californian I am). But it really shouldn't count. First I only stood up once for approx 1.32 seconds and I think they were considered hobbit size waves.

Lucky for me, I was in Maui for Catie and Kurt's wedding (it was awesome and pics to come tomorrow), so I had no choice but to take surfing lessons while there.

Nancy Emerson started a great surfing clinic and I am so glad I took lessons from them. Our instructor, Billy, was great and I had so much fun!! Like, I feel in love with the first wave and no matter what my body tells me the day after, surfing is worth it! I love that rush of getting pushed by the wave and then standing up and riding it all the way. Ocean, even if you can be dark, creepy and full of man eating sharks, I still love you.

They also had a photographer to document this epic event. What. What. Don't be hatin on the waves - no pipelines for me...yet. Yep, I got hooked. Bummer I currently reside in the middle of Tejas, but then again, when has that ever stopped adventures?!

And of course (even if I'm not a fan of the Longhorns), gotta represent my Austin. Not sure who I was throwing out signs to, but now the Pacific Ocean knows that I love me some Austin.

The highest mountain in New Mexico is Wheeler Peak. And I climbed it, all 13,161 feet of it. I promise that last sentence was not a joke. I may have broken the record for the slowest summit EVER, but I did reach the top.

I consider myself a fairly active person, but this mountain slapped my fit around. How sweet. Altitude doesn't mess around much either. I'm pretty sure hiking this mountain takes a place in the top 5 of most challenging.

As we started, I figured I would be the person to watch from the back. You know, make sure no one was left behind. Our first major stop was the lake. A much welcomed break. I could breathe normal - yay! But it was a gorgeous view.

After a few bites and short rest, one of the more, let's say "experienced" climbers pointed out where the summit was. My first thought was something along the lines of “Yeah right because that's about 498 miles away."

This was definitely the hardest part of the climb. I mean, it may as well have gone straight up. There's some stuff called "scree," but I much prefer to call them spawns of satan. It's the loose rocks you find on mountains. And it is cruel to any climber. I'm not going to lie, there were a couple times when I was ready to throw in the towel, the first being when I was climbing up the scree and one leg slipped back causing me to do the splits. Rad. I was praying that the little plant I was holding onto did not rip out.

After managing to reach the top, it was a great feeling. The view was stunning and I was on top of a mountain. :)

When we were almost down the mountain, thunder clouds rolled in. No biggy really, we're almost to the car. Then hail, not rain kids, HAIL started to drop. My legs hated me at that moment, so there was no way I was going to pick up speed. One can always use a little hail.

Like I said it was some hard work. There were times when I wanted to kick the mountain and quit (a very mature response) and times going back down that if I fell one more time (going down a mountain is rough), I was going to plant myself on top of a rock and wait for a helicopter to come and get me. But its experiences like these that you learn something about yourself and about life. Just keeping pushing through, one step at a time. So I say go and get crazy and try something you never thought you would. Holla!

I think after today's experience, I should be a professional hiker. Like, I might hit up Mt. Everest next.

Morning started off great. Being up in Angel Fire, New Mexico is gorgeous. The morning we chilled for a bit and I got to hang out with some cute furry friends. Squirrels make me chuckle. I can do without the freak crickets though, that make whack noises, fly at you when hiking and are just straight disgusting.

Our hiking took us to Eagle Nest to conquer Clear Creek. Knowing my special ability to fall, I jokingly warned the three friends with me that if I fall, to laugh after I get up. According to the 2009 guide, this trail was "one of the most popular trails" with "log bridges, small waterfalls and great photo ops." Awesome, I should be fine, seeing as how the last time I went hiking was in high school. We started up what looked like the entrance. After about 10 minutes I'm thinking...hmm...this is tougher than I thought. I was told it should be no problem for the beginner. Yet, I'm holding onto to tree trunks so I don't slip down into water. But hey, what's a day without risks?

The best part came when a fallen tree trunk came out and pretty much attacked me and I hit the ground so hard it was nothing short of hilarious. Yes, it was the tree's fault. There's no way my shoelace could have got caught on a branch and I trip. The most funny thing about this (because I was on the floor laughing so hard) was the other people's reactions. The best line came from Jason, who calmly said "We won't laugh until you get up." That made me laugh even more. It makes me laugh just thinking about it. I saw myself slow-mo heading toward the ground. I'm sure I will have an awesome scar for future story telling.

After about 15 more minutes we decide this is actually the wrong place, maybe not even a trail at all. Holler. Eventually we make it back down and found the right trail. That one was a bit more easier.

You never know what you will see or what will happen when you hit the road covering West Texas. Like say, the city of Bangs, Texas, Alpacas in New Mexico or running over a wad of chain link fence and dragging it for 50 feet.

What looked like tumbleweed was instead some fencing that hooked to the bottom of our compact vehicle.

Awesome.

I bet we were a sight to see: One compact car, 3 ladies, 2 partly underneath (I was flat on my stomach thinking I made a pretty wise decision with the white tank top), pulling, smashing and pushing the very stubborn metal. But we showed it who was boss. Don't mess with girls from Tejas :).

And in case you haven't heard, Texas is big and in some places empty where we were the only car. There is only one thing to do in a situation like this: photoshoot!!!

I love art. Photography, architecture, sculpture, painting, drawing and so on. I loved going to the Getty when I lived in So Cal and wish I had spent more time in the Louve when I visited Paris. What really gets me is when something literally takes my breath away, when I am moved so deeply because something is so beautiful. Whether it be the story it tells or the masterpiece that it is.

The video below is one of the most moving things I've seen in awhile. I rarely, if ever, post a youtube video on the blog, but this video is amazing. Kseniya Simonova tells the story of Germany's occupation of Ukraine and even though I have absolutely no clue what that would have been like, the way she tells the story touches my heart.

This is powerful, moving and definitely worth your time.

Mobile Loaves and Fishes

I recently had a chance to go out on a truck run with an organization called Mobile Loaves and Fishes. Celebrating 10 years, this organization has touched the lives of numerous people around Austin, San Antonio, New Orleans, Providence, and Nashville daily with trucks runs that deliver food and clothing to those who need it most.

I love opportunities like this - a chance to meet people I never would. Little things really do make a difference. To look at someone, who for whatever reason is struggling and living on the streets or just barely making it, and remind them that they are valued. Dignity for many, is something long forgotten, but it's organizations like Mobile Loaves that seek to bring it back to them. A simple meal, touch, acknowledgment.

And then there are the kids. As our truck pulled into the parking lot, a group of kids came running up. Some with their pajamas still on, some with tattered clothing, some without shoes. As tears quickly filled my eyes, I blinked fast and got ready to serve the food. They said thank you a lot, asked for more lemonade and tea, got excited for the candy and sat with their friends, enjoying their hot dogs and other goodies.

Since the truck was covered with the other volunteers, I stepped back and had the opportunity to pull out my camera.

After a little time passed, I hear “Can you take my picture?” come from the sweetest little boy in the world. My heart melted.

I love being the person with the camera. After a kid decides you are legit, they LOVE the camera and thus, you are luckily let into their little world.

One of my favorite parts is when they see themselves in the little LCD screen. A child’s laughter is one of the greatest sounds in the world. I could do this forever.

They can always use volunteers, so don't hesitate to sign up. You won't be disappointed.

We're in a recession. And it's rough. More than ever, I look for ways to get things for really cheap or better yet free. I love finding a sweet deal at Target - I come out with a smile on my face, like I've beaten the system. Googling coupons comes up with some stinkin rad finds. My favorite coupon that came in the mail was for a free pot of chocolate at the Melting Pot. I'm down with that yo! Already used one, looking forward to using the other one.

I kind of like it even more when I find free things in the photo world. And recently I've come across some good ones. So today's "Mondays" post covers a couple of helpful and free stuff for people who have the best job in the world :)

Lightroom presets:
Here's a sweet little blog post about Adobe Lightroom (which includes the link to the FREE 30 day trial). If you are a photographer and haven't experienced brilliance known as Lightroom, I would get on that boat quick. The blog also has links to FREE (yay!!) lightroom presets. Some of these have become a staple in my post-production of photos.

My adventures as a Rower

This week I began my path to London 2012 – as a rower. And only about 3.82% of that sentence is true. The part about “this week” and “rower.” Yep, I have entered the world of sculling.

My friend Linda and I had our first lesson in rowing at the Texas Rowing Center this week. It was a ton of fun and I have a new respect for rowers. Not as easy as it looks – trust me. I also thought that my brain was going to explode after about 5.86 minutes of watching how to row properly. I mean, who knew that in the 90’s the International Rowing Federation of Switzerland decided that the left hand goes over the right hand when handling the oars?? Pressure!!

I was nervous.

There are lots of little things you have to keep in mind so you don’t tip your scull over. I was kind of glad the sun decided to go down, because I would have fallen out on my first attempt. Instead we worked on the dock, getting used to the stroke, the feathered and square position of the oars, and switching the oars at the right moment (first at your ankles, then at your sternum). And I was about as smooth as a porcupine. Heck yes. My “flow” has yet to make an appearance, but until then I shall continue to look like Robocop. But I’m excited to keep at it and get a most excellent work out in the process. Just one more adventure that I am sure will bring plenty of laughs.

Once again Forbeyon has produced what I like to call awesomeness. And this isn’t the first time I’ve opened up the proofs to my album and had my jaw drop.

For real folks, their design team and any one else involved with them are great. I always know that they are going to produce something gorgeous, but each time they surpass my expectations.

It's all about Tat.

Today I’m want to continue the tradition of celebrating another one of my favorite people. This time it’s my grandpa.

Today is his birthday and he turns 97. Yeah – da-ang.

Tat (how we have always called him) was born the year the Titanic sank and was around for two of the biggest wars in modern history, not to mention all the other ones. He endured racism, yet experienced the freedom that came with the Civil Rights movement. He helped raise three kids with an amazing woman and was married for nearly 70 years before my grandma passed away 5 years ago.

He has a gentle spirit of a man in his 90’s, yet in him I see amazing strength. I love his laugh when my mom jokes around with him, his little sayings, watching my dad interact with him (his dad), hanging out with him in the kitchen when I visit Edgard and I love that I can still talk to a man who has witnessed more change than I ever will. He reminds me that I am indeed part Southern, and even more so part Louisianan (because seriously, Louisiana can be its own little country :) and that makes me happy. All of my grandparents were amazing and they have made me so proud of the family name that I carry.

Today is one of my favorite people on planet earth's birthday - my Dad.

To the man who coached me at soccer for 789 years, showed me that nerdy is actually cool :), introduced me to tennis even when I was quite stubborn about learning backhand and serving properly and also taught me the epicness of Spades.

To the man who I know loves me so much and provides more than I deserve and when I tell him he is awesome, he says "Thank Jesus!" I giggle, but know it is true.

Who, if I said I wanted to move to the moon, would smile his "my daughter is insane, where does she get these ideas from?" smile, and tell me to just pray about and that the Lord will show me the way, then be there to support me in my latest and greatest idea.

To the man who has shown me what it means to be treated like a lady :)

To him, I say Happy Birthday! I love you so much!

I think my brain is on vacation. I had a photo from Wed night that I wanted to post and somehow in the three seconds it takes to post the images in the blog, I left this one out. Vacation come quickly!!

This was on the way back to the car after kayaking. The skyline is gorgeous! I only had my 50 mm and the fence was my tripod, but I couldn't get over the way the light hit the buildings. Plus this month the moon is gettin' crazy with Mars, so it has been beautiful to look at every night as well. Happy Friday!

One more reason to love the ATX

Did you know Austin is often referred to as the ATX? Fun fact that I recently learned. I thought it was only the ATL that dropped the triple letters. But Austin is hip like that. I know I’ve mentioned this before – but if you are looking for an awesome city to be a part of, this is the place.

One such area that I have been spending quite a lot of time with is Town Lake (officially called Lady Bird Lake, but I like to think I’m old school and still call it Town Lake). We’re getting pretty serious, that I even bought a year membership. What better way to workout then on a rad lake with friends? Linda and Mariko were with me yesterday and it was a good time. Next week starts sculling. I will give myself 5 points if I don’t fall out of that boat. Have you seen how skinny those are?!?

I couldn’t resist bringing my camera. As I was taking pics though, I couldn't help but think: "I hope I don't fall in, I think Nessie’s cousin might reside at the depths." (This one is totally legit, as Mariko and Linda earlier spotted the world’s largest “turtle”). And "I wonder how long my friends will be laughing before they save me."

But really, kayaking on beautiful water on a gorgeous evening - man, I can never get enough of this city.

There are a quapillion (if that's not a word, it just became one) things out there for photographers. What to offer clients, stuff to make the work flow easier, keyboards that give you ripped arms and abs as you edit your photos. The last one I just made but that would be nice to see on the market. Some things I would never get, but there are some things that I find and love! It's those that I can't help but talk about.

Today I want to give another shout out to my friend Christina over at ChrysQ slipcovers. You may remember my first post about these album slipcovers, but what rocks is that each season a new collection is released. Nice!! So probably with every new slipcover I get you can expect a blog post :). She just released laptop and iPhone covers too. Can't wait to get mine!! I'm still having an internal debate about which color I want. Black or red?!?!?

Christina - it's always awesome to work with you! Hopefully we can meet up again soon!

A look at photography books

When I took a film photography class in college we used the book Photography. Not only was it full of technical goodness, but what I loved most about that book was the images throughout. I will never get over the creativity of the people of this world. I could walk around a photography gallery and never get bored. So when I find a good photography book - I hold on to it.

Today's "Mondays" post is all about books. Below are 6 photography books that I always find myself going back to and flipping through the pages, enjoying each page.

#1 Hope in the Dark by Jeremy Cowart and Jena Lee
I'm pretty sure I have talked about this book 7.8 trillion times, but I really love it. My copy even has pages falling out. But I love Africa and this books captures it in such a beautiful way. It also has reflections (that's where Jena Lee comes in) that make you think and get involved. And of course Cowart's photography is stunning.

#2 Cats in the Sun by Hans Silvester
I'm a dog person. I love puppies and hope to one day have one. But I don't hate on cats either. My parents have a crazy one that forgets who you are in about 3 seconds. I call her Millisecond Mindy, but I still like her. This book is set in the Greek isles (probably another reason I like it) and captures the cats that roam the place. I couldn't give an exact reason why I like it so much, but maybe it has to do with the comedy that often comes with animals in their element.

#3 Great Photographs of World War II by Neil Kagan
I love history. I am especially fascinated with the Civil War and World War II. The Civil War does have an intriguing collection of it's own, but this book was the first collection that I have ever come across with so many photographs from WWII and several that I have never seen before. It's intense. I don't see how it couldn't be. War is intense. It covers the joys of the war ending, the cruelty of the victims of the Third Reich and other Axis powers, the consequences that traitors and spies faced, the life of the soldier, the life of those back home, the cost of ending the war in Japan and everything in between.

#4 100 Photographs that Changed the World by Robert Sullivan
One of my favorite stores is Borders. One of my favorite sections? The tables always out front or in the lobby of discounted books. I love checking them out because there are always really cheap photography books. This is one of the type of books that you find there. From Mathew Brady's famous portrait of Abraham Lincoln, Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother of 1936, Jackie Robinson stealing a base, the Beatles, September 11th, this book shows them all. I think I like this book so much because of my love for photojournalism too.

#5 The Best of Sports Illustrated

In college I had a subscription to Sports Illustrated. My favorite part was The First Look. It was at the beginning of the magazine and contained a few shots from that week in the sports world. Since I enjoy sports and at that time was doing sports photography, it was helpful and enjoyable.

#6 Capture the Moment by Cyma Rubin and Eric Newton
The Pulitzer Prize is the most prestigious award for photojournalism in America. This is a book of these award-winning photographs and tells the stories behind the photos from the people who took them. The stories are pretty crazy and always interesting.

When I get excited about upcoming happenings I can get antsy. When I was younger I would pack approximately 8.32 years before a vacation. Now I am usually praying that I didn’t forget anything when I packed the night before. But at least I know how to survive a trip without luggage. :)

So it isn't surprsing that I am already excited about the next JLP collections. While I really love the current collections and think you all should definitely buy a print or two :), I am already working on the Fall collections. Some of the work has already made special appearances via POTW, but I’m excited about the ideas and wanted to drop a sneak peek. Enjoy!

Summer Collection 09!

Thinking back, I didn’t really know how this photography venture would all pan out. I remember after I started thinking about this idea (creating photography and art for the sole purpose of selling it to help others), I started writing out thoughts, praying, changing the previous ideas/thoughts and then repeating the cycle about 892 times. And to be honest, this still continues.

Around that time, I heard about CompassionArt. They had a website up and running, but the music and book weren't released yet. I knew that it was going to be something huge though and I loved the model it gave to make a difference in this world. It really inspired me to move forward, to take a risk and use what gifts and talents God's given for something bigger than me. (Check out their website here)

One of the birthday gifts I received was a copy of the book that Compassion Art released, The Art of Compassion. Reading this book was encouraging in so many ways and it got me excited. It reminded me why I wanted to start Jamie Lynne Photography in the first place. It got me excited to do something crazy like sell photos where I never see the profit. It got me excited to continue on this great adventure called Life and it got me excited to continue to do what I absolutely love to do.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book:

I don’t think you have to be famous to try and make a difference in this world. Actually, I know you don’t. For me, part of that is creating beauty so that others may experience life and love.

As I was cruising down the 35 from Austin to Kyle on Saturday, I was excited. I was headed toward Texas Old Town again and ready to shoot a wedding. Everytime I have done a wedding at this place, it is with such awesome couples. Nathan and Rebekah are such an example of a love that is patient, kind and always hopes. They are the kind of couple that you want to sit and talk with and hear their stories time and time again. If I wrote a book of all the stories of the wonderful couples I have worked with - man, it would be epic.

I was so blessed by Rebekah and Nathan - the ceremony, their family and friends..everything! Yay for love! :)

Another Monday post - Vendor Shout Out!

Monday likes to sneak up and pounce on me. But even though I had to say farewell to the weekend (which included the awesome wedding of Nathan and Rebekah), Mondays do bring a new week of adventure, triple digit heat, hopefully some rowing time on the Lake and yet another installation of “Mondays” post of random photography related goodness.

This week I want to give a vendor shout out. There are some awesome vendors that make my job amazing and make me love what I do more and more. When you get to work with awesome people, you can’t help but want to let the internet world know that they are rad. :)

Today, I wanted to give a shout out to Carly of Playful Pickle Designs. She’s created two blogs and a logo for me already and I have loved all of them. She is great to work with too.

Graphic design has always fascinated me and I love to see the work people create from scratch. It’s an art. I give Carly a bunch of ideas (which are usually all over the place) and I eagerly await what she sends. And it is always fantastic. For all the google/facebook readers that don’t see the blog, I got all crazy and included a screen shot.

Mimi is going to be a senior!

I know this line is dropped about 378 times an hour, but time flies by so quickly. It seems like I was just at the hospital visiting my aunt and newborn Mimi. Now she is going to be a senior. What?? If she is graduating, that means it's my 10 year reunion. That’s funny.

I don’t think I’ll ever get over how fast time passes by, especially since it likes to pick up speed as you get older. As Mimi gets ready to start her senior year, I am blessed to look back at all our adventures, including Boston, Canada, D-land, DCLA and of course EPIC battles of Spades. Now little Mimi is all grown up!

Mimi – I’m excited for what the future holds for you. As you think about college (don’t hate on CSUF, you’ll hurt his feelings :) and what opportunities there are for you, continue to dream big and trust that the Lord has an amazing plan. Keep keeping it real with your 500 AP classes (thanks for showing all of the older cousins up :) and stay who you are. Keep dropping it too! Heyyyyy! You are beautiful young lady :)

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m the crier. I’m the one who will cry at a commercial. It’s embarrassing. Because really, the “there’s something in my contact” excuse starts to sound fishy to people when I use it every time. On my flight to California for the wedding this past weekend I was reading a book (that I’ve read before) and 100% started crying. People on the plan probably thought I was nuts. Perfect.

So usually at weddings I’ll get a bit teary eyed. This is especially true when I see a groom’s face light up at the sight of his bride. Just can’t seem to help it. Good thing I have a camera to cover my face. Don’t want people thinking I’m that nerdy one or anything.

I knew Nancy and Steve’s wedding was going to be awesome because I already had the chance to hang out with them for their engagement session and loved it! I love the look on Steve’s face every time he looks at Nancy. I mean, he even proposed in Italy - enough said! And I love that Nancy will have a huge smile come across her face when she sees her man!

Their reception was at the Lindley Scott House (which I am a huge fan of) and I loved the color scheme they choose. Everything was beautiful! Thanks again Nancy and Steve for letting me be a part of your special day – I was truly blessed!

Turning old is fun!!

Yep. Today is my birthday. One more year means one more closer to 30 (which will now be referred to as 20 + 10). I think it’s gonna continue to be a fun ride though, through these "late 20's." And I’m excited! So in honor of new adventures, I thought it would be fun to create a list of 30 things I want to accomplish before I turn 30. Some are more for chuckles, some are business related and then there's everything in between. And of course since it is posted on the internet I have to stay committed. It should be fun checking in 365 days from now and see how I’m doing :)

1. Get myself back to Africa…at the very least once, but I would prefer twice.
2. Re-read Lord of the Rings. It’s been a while.
3. Finish my Masters Degree. I hope to be done this year, but who knows, seeing as how this little beast has taken me about as twice long as my B.A. Awesome. (If you are curious, it's in History).
4. I’m going to need about two more stamps in my passport. Minimum.
5. Make cinnamon rolls from my grandma's recipe. It's a Lapeyrolerie thing :)
6. Try Salt Lick BBQ. I'm thinking this might happen in October when my parents come out to Austin to hang out with their favorite child. I swear that's what they said.
7. Be in another wedding. I'm not worried about this one, my friends are awesome squared.
8. Shoot more destination weddings. I like planes.
9. Start an early 20's bible study. I miss doing that.
10. Recruit more people for my team over at Mocha Club. Saving lives for $7.00 a month. What is that? You want to join?? Radness! Just click here!
11. Get a puppy!! Why not dream big dreams?
12. Be able to handle sculling solo. Although our team of 4 just might make a running at London 2012. Word.
13. I think I'm going to take the next few for some of the photography equipment I want to buy, because really is it ever enough?? #1 - Canon 5D.
14. #2 - Canon Wide Angle lens. This will feed my major obsession with clouds.
15. #3 - Canon G10. I like him. I'll carry him with me wherever I go and I know we'll become life long friends.
16. #4 - Canon Macro lens. Yep, I have a crush on Canon.
17. See some of my favs in concert, like Needtobreathe.
18. Get an epic new website. Slowly in the works...
19. Get a blog makeover. I'm gonna be honest, I kind of cheated by adding this one because I have one in the works right now and should be up within a couple of weeks. :) At least I know I'll get one checked off.
20. I really want a garden full of wildflowers. Maybe I'll get crazy and plant something healthy too.
21. Apply for Amazing Race with Mariko. I laugh thinking of the possibilities.
22. Throw a Lost party sometime during the final season. Single tear falls that it is ending.
23. Attend WPPI, an epic wedding/portrait photographer annual convention.
24. Do all that I can to make this world a better place. So much that needs to be done, but as MLK Jr. once said "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter."
25. I think it would be really rad to have an art show.
26. Learn French and maybe refresh my Spanish.
27. Go on a road trip because road trips are fun. Plus you find the most random things ever.
28. Visit Portland, Nashville, Seattle and the OKC. I'll use any excuse to visit friends.
29. Dare I say it...be fully self-employed :) :)
30. Get a Shootsac. This epic little product is one more thing on my photo wish list :).

After a great weekend of California love (including a wedding, birthday fun, senior session and of course a date with Del Taco), today has been a rough one. It always is coming back from visiting Cali, but my travel times were a little rough. My flight got back into A-town at 11:45 last night, which meant that I didn’t see my lovely little pillow until about 1:00 a.m. Sweet action when you have to get up at 5:45 that same morning. I need to apologize to my snooze button because he got quite the beating this morning. But let’s rejoice, because even though this is the third installment of my “Mondays” posts, I actually posted it on Monday. Holler!

Today’s post I want to give shout outs to wedding photographers who have inspired me in numerous ways. Whether in my style, how to run a biz or anything else about photography. Again, I could list a trillion more, but I figure 3 is a good number.

First off, even though I don’t know any of these people that I am blogging about, they are rad. I just know it. Her blog is probably one of the most popular blogs I know and it is easy to see why. She makes me laugh and anyone who throws out “holla” on a consistent basis is obviously legit. Her style is unique and gorgeous. Plus she writes funny posts about her dog Polo. Out of the three mentioned, I’ve actually seen him in action. He shot one of my closest friends’ weddings. Jim and Robin got married in 2004 and I still love to look at their wedding pics. She sent me some to post – so thanks Robin :)

He also has done some amazing things on the business end of photography, including his Show It website. From slideshows to the new website creator (which I am excited to start checking out), he has created great resources for photographers.

Mike Colon was the first photographer I’ve ever “followed” (i.e. blog stalk :) and ranks top in my book. He clearly loves his family and Jesus and talks about both so openly. Plus he is one of the most respected leaders in our wedding photog world. He shares and gives back to the photo community in so many ways. You can’t help but like someone who is so willing to share and give. He even recently gave away his wedding photography services in a contest to a deserving couple who work in the non-profit world. I vote that is awesome. Definitely something I would like to do.

Oh and have I mentioned his work is ridiculously amazing? Check out his Italy shots he posted. The romantic in me just looks and sighs…

Alright, one more shout out: Jerry Ghionis - I heard him speak at Imaging USA and not only is he hilarious, but I love his creativity (just think like MacGyver) and turning any location into something great and unique. Plus he has an accent. If that doesn't bump you up, then I don't know what will.

On Saturday I decided to be academic and do some research at the University of Texas. The resources there are great and it was about time I started taking advantage of them. I brought my camera too because I think it is a beautiful campus (don't worry, I don't randomly throw out "Hook Um Horns" - that only comes out when people in Cali start being mean about Austin :).

But my planned campus photography adventure didn't get very far because Austin is currently in a contest to see how hot it can get before the residents of the city start to melt. I think they are winning. Everyday I come out and sigh with relief that my tires didn't melt.

Right outside of where I was researching was this fountain. I wanted to jump in, but thought I would encounter campus police another day :)

Yes, my “Mondays” post is on Tuesday once again. Just say it – I suck at life. :) But to be honest, I couldn’t decide what to write on. I have my list of ideas, but I was being undecisive. I debated and then I got distracted yesterday after work. I was reading a book and couldn’t put it down. Yeah, I know – how embarrassing. I just admitted to the internet world that I read for 5 hours straight yesterday. Holler!

Inspiration hit when I was on twitter. If you aren’t on twitter, you should be. Don’t hate, appreciate!

But really, it is a great place to network, find some inspiration and plus it is just fun. So today I dedicate this post to twitter. And if you have one or finally get awesome and get one yourself, let’s be friends on twitter!

digitalps - I just came across them in the twitter world and this is a great resource if you are starting out or even if you are a seasoned pro.

gettotallyrad – I love these actions. I need to buy more of them. Plus their tweets often make me chuckle.

Prodpi – This is the printer that I use and I like them. Their pearl paper makes me smile.

pdnonline – They provide great posts about the photography world. Always something interesting to read, ponder and discuss.

artwolfe – One of my first photography prints I ever owned was by Art Wolfe. (It was a birthday gift and I vividly remember looking for my presents and finding them before my birthday. Yep, I was that child. :) It was a picture of the cutest fuzzy/sweetpea in the world (a wolf pup). I love his stuff. And he twitters cool opportunities and resources for photographers.

soccerdotcom - I had to throw that in... World Cup is coming!! The only time I can freely express my for love for soccer in America. :)

I miss film

The first professional camera that I ever bought was a Canon film camera. I loved him. I actually still have that camera because I can’t bring myself to sell it or give it away. We have so many memories together from college days. :) APU basketball and football games, my first photography class, going MIA for a week after flying out of the car window while leaving for Spring Break, my first engagement session and first small wedding… oh the mems! But I love film. If it weren’t so costly (or if I had spare funds just hanging out) I would get myself a darkroom and shoot film just for giggles.

My dad has an Olympus OM 10 from 1979 that I “borrowed” when I moved to Austin (thanks Dad! :). It comes with the raddest 1970s green camera bag too. I love that thing. So early this year when we made a trip out to Fredericksburg, I bought some black and white film and had some fun with the 50mm 1.4 lens. I had to laugh at myself though, because at the beginning of the day I would automatically look on the back of the camera after each shot. Each time a nice black case stared right back at me. Holler back for film.

It seems like Mondays are always so loco, crazy, out of control. Summer has had some "fun" Mondays - so much so that I post Monday blogs on Tuesday. But I thought I would use Mondays to blog about photo randomness - maybe give peeps a break from Mondays with some photo inspiration.

So I start with my first "Mondays" post with photographers that inspire me. I'm sticking with non-wedding photographers this time around because I really am inspired by all types of photography. I should get paid for all the blog reading/stalking that I do. :) But there are just so many that I love to look at. So here are a few - I hope you are inspired as much as I am!

Jimmy Williams -
I saw this photo and instantly became a fan. His work tells a story in such a captivating way and I go back and look at the pictures over and over again. He makes me want to meet the people he photographed. Plus this series reminds me a lot of my grandpa. He can photograph other people and make it personal for me. That's what I call rocking it!

Jeremy Cowart -
I first came across his work in Hope In the Dark, an amazing book about Africa that you should all purchase. Little did I know how big he was. I'm pretty sure he has taken a photo of every country star in Nashville. He also traveled with the Passion World Tour, capturing it in an amazing and astounding way. His use of light is fantastic and I'm pretty sure he is rad, so go check out his work too!

Clark Little -
If you have a day that sucks, just go to his website. I usually look at his website with my jaw dropped and his work makes me want to become a mermaid and live in the oceans of Hawaii.

I like sleep a lot. So if you are going to ask me to stay up until the wee hours of the night it pretty much has to be for something epic and beyond the limits of normal radness. Last night was one such thing.

Me and 3 very awesome people went to a Michael Jackson tribute sing along at the Alamo Draft House. Yes, these are radical. It consists of dressing up, watching music videos and singing along as loud as you can. Oh and dancing. Lots of dancing. We donned our white tank tops, black fedora hats and busted a move all night long. It was great!

I could watch Michael dance all night long. Billie Jean, Captain EO, Jackson Five songs...and seriously, the leaning in Smooth Criminal still amazes me. Come to think of it, pretty much any MJ song rocks and reminds me of my childhood, my dad dancing, good times with fam and friends. He really was the King of Pop and I'm sad that he is dead. I cried. But I know his legacy of dance, singing, entertainment, etc will continue - and that makes me happy. Thanks MJ for the moves, the beats and radness.

Today's POTW is from my current collection on JLP. It's Christ Church College at Oxford University. I fell in love with that place. I think speaking in a British accent might even make me smarter. Not proven, but a theory.

Anyway, one thing I love about these weekly photos is that as I go through each one, I relive the story of each one. And that usually involves some kind of chuckle. If I were a musician, I think this would be like my first album release. One you will never forget, but know that it was just the beginning.

But I am excited for new stuff that I have been working on and new collections to release. New travels and new adventures have brought about opportunities for me to challenge and expand myself as an artist. And this makes me excited!

These collections are very close on the horizon, but with that, I will also "retire" the original JLP collection. I just felt so hardcore dropping the word retire in a blog. Holla! The current collection will close in 2 weeks (July 17th), so be sure to place any last minute orders!! It's all about changing the world with love! Never forget that part. And if you are a fan of facebook or twitter like I am, please help spread the word! Thanks for keeping it real!

Once again triple digit heat didn't stop me from having a rocking weekend. Part of it included hanging out at at Milo's birthday party. What's crazy is that it seems like I was just capturing his birthday last year. What a second Time...kick it, chill, just hang. You're gettin a little crazy up in here, up in here.

Anyway, I'll post some more of Milo tomorrow, but part of the party was at a Fire Station. That's code for straight up awesome. I almost wanted to sneak a Firefighter sticker badge (for my roommates of course), but my almost 27 year old self (what did I tell you Time?!!?) told me to not be a nerd. But how fun and creative! The kids were the cutest and it was great to see how much fun they had.

More to come tomorrow, but just wanted to give a shout out of thanks to the people who dedicate their lives to saving others. One word: Holler.

Photo of the Week #42

I was hanging out with some friends last night and while talking over some epic gelato, we had some good laughs of travel stories. That got me thinking about Europe and my want/need to go back. This week's POTW is a photo from my trip to Paris in 2004. The days of film camera and kit lens. Old school kids. Old school.

I laugh thinking about that trip. I don't know what was more comical: the bus at the airport leaving with half of us on the curb, half in the bus and one person halfway on the steps of the bus and on the curb hauling our luggage, the subway stopping somewhere in the middle of Paris at 11:30 at night and the conductor telling us in French that we had to get off and then roaming around the city looking for our hotel, the crazy heat wave that happened to hit, the hotel that made me want to stop eating until I was 83 because me and my luggage would barely fit in the elevator and hallway, or maybe it was watching my dad in Paris. :)

I loved that trip - I got to be in Normandy for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. That was such an awesome day of humanity. That sounds so freaky cheesy, but I can't think of what else to say. So many countries were represented and we had random French people drive us around (we had no car and no clue of where we were) because they were thankful that the Americans were there storming the beaches 60 years prior. Hi, I'm a history geek and totally get teary-eyed at stuff like that. Awesome.

Yep - I definitely need to go back. Plus I have much better camera equipment these days and don't want to leave Europe out. That would be mean.

Why Austin will rock your face off

When I told people back in the great state of California I was moving to Austin, the usual response was "TEXAS?!!?" I must clarify, I moved to Austin, not Texas. :) But I really don't think Texans can get upset at what people say when they threaten to do some seceding. And I know there are some jokes of how Californians roll (just know it is mad deep - that's how we roll). But you gotta stop hating on Tejas until you've experienced the awesomeness known as Austin.

I love Austin. I never thought I would love a city so much. Austin reminds me of a lot of the culture that I grew up in and love. The world comes to you. And that is rad. Just add amazing amounts of beautiful scenery, wayyyyy cheaper cost of living, live music anywhere you go, random eccentric things that you just smile at and say "That's so Austin," and you got one awesome city. Plus the photo opportunities are endless. So here are some of my favorites places around Austin that we found on Sunday:

This was downtown on the East Side. We had heard there was some cool graffiti on walls and thought it would make for a sweet background. We couldn’t find the one we were told about, but then we found this wall, which was for a company called East End Ink. We felt pretty hardcore.

This is Magnolia Café. Two words: Chicken Enchiladas. I’ve heard they have really good pancakes too, but haven’t been there for breakfast quite yet.

I haven’t had any interaction with the Austin Motel, but it has been part of South Congress for 71 years. So it must be cool.

Like I said before, even the walls of buildings are artsy and so creative. This is off of South 1st Street and Annie. It’s a cool relic shop that I would have gone into, but it was closed.

You know me and bats. Here’s a little monument off of Congress.

This is part of the décor of Chuy’s. Typing about it makes me want to eat some enchiladas, tacos or pretty much anything from that menu (that isn't too spicy though :). I need to stop blogging about food when I am hungry.

I think I might be a cloud stalker.

And one of the rules that comes with calling me your roommate - I get to make you be my models whenever I want. New lens? Photoshoot! Scoped out a sweet location? Guess what roomies??? More photos! Good thing they are awesome.

Yesterday my rad roommates and I stared 106 degree weather in the face and with the help Mickey D's ice cream conquered the heat and went exploring Austin. I've been wanting to start a new project capturing one of the best cities in the world and since we moved, I had an excuse. We have some bare walls and they need to be covered with pretty pictures.

So here's a sneak peek of the good times this past Sunday.

Can anyone guess which place in Austin this is!? I'll give you a clue: I would eat here everyday if I could. Not that food runs my life or anything :)

It could be because I take after my dad in so many ways, but whatever the reason, my dad is the other 1/2 of Parent Awesomeness. Although minus .7 points for raining on my "Let's get a husky puppy because our cats are kind of insane" parade and forcing me to drive a truck that hates me.

My dad makes me laugh even when he doesn't mean to ("Christianity Rules!!" enough said Dad :), is a source of strength and comfort whenever I need and has been an amazing example of what it means to be a godly husband and father. He has taught me so much about living a life for Jesus and having faith no matter the circumstance.

Plus we can rip the Lakers when they lose by 5784935470353 points in a playoff game, but get excited when they come through in the clutch, like this year. Holla!

I love old pictures. They make me smile and/or make me laugh really hard. Nothing like the random 80's hair decorations.

I never get tired of seeing kids in their element. Their laughter is one of the greatest sounds on this planet and they find wonder in everything. It reminds me of how to live life:
